Blessed are the Merciful — Matthew 5:7

Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” In this sermon, we consider what it means to be merciful and how the mercy we have received from Christ should shape the way we treat others.

Biblical mercy includes forgiveness toward those who have wronged us, compassion toward those in need, and evangelism toward those who are perishing without Christ. We cannot earn God’s mercy by being merciful, but those who have truly experienced the mercy of God should freely extend that mercy to others.

Because Jesus has shown us mercy, we can forgive those who have wronged us, help those who are in need, and point others to the gospel of Jesus Christ—the greatest mercy we can offer to a soul that is perishing.
