Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” But what does it mean to have a pure heart, and how can sinful people ever hope to see a holy God?
The Bible tells us that our hearts are naturally deceitful and sinful. Purity is not something we can achieve through our own efforts. Instead, God promises to cleanse His people, give them a new heart, and put His Spirit within them.
For those who trust in Christ, this promise reaches its ultimate fulfillment in eternity. The redeemed will see God—not merely know about Him, but behold His face. From Job’s hope that he would see his Redeemer to John’s promise that “we shall see him as he is,” Scripture points us toward the glorious hope of seeing God.
The pure in heart are blessed because, through Christ, they have been given new hearts and the sure promise that one day they will see God.
