In Matthew 5:5, Jesus declares, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This statement presents a striking paradox. The world often celebrates ambition, strength, self-confidence, and the pursuit of power, yet Jesus says that the meek—not the proud—will inherit the earth.
Biblical meekness is not weakness or passivity. It is humility, gentleness, consideration, and a proper understanding of oneself. The meek person is not consumed with self-importance, easily offended, or concerned with proving himself. Instead, he entrusts himself to God and considers others.
Jesus is Himself the perfect model of meekness. Though He is the eternal Son of God, He humbled Himself, became a servant, endured suffering without retaliation, and willingly laid down His life for His people. Yet the meek Christ is also the conquering King who will return in glory.
The promise that the meek will inherit the earth ultimately points toward the future kingdom of Christ. Drawing from Psalm 37, Jesus assures His people that the wicked will not have the final victory. The earth belongs to Christ, and He will give it as an inheritance to His redeemed people, who will reign with Him.
The Christian, therefore, should seek to grow in meekness while recognizing that true meekness is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit. We are called to look to Christ, follow His example, and rejoice that the kingdom belongs not to those who are filled with themselves, but to those who are filled with Christ.
