Colossians 2:16-23

In this sermon from Colossians 2:8 and 16–23, the central question is: What are you trusting in? Paul warns the church against being led astray by human traditions, false teachings, and added requirements that go beyond Christ.

The issue in Colossae was the temptation to make salvation “Christ and…”—adding dietary laws, festivals, ascetic practices, or even spiritual experiences as necessary for standing before God. Paul makes clear that these things are shadows pointing to Christ, while Christ Himself is the substance. To add anything to Him is to miss the gospel.

Believers are cautioned not to let others judge them by external practices, not to be disqualified by false humility or visions, and not to submit to man-made regulations. These things may appear wise, but they have no value in producing true holiness.

Instead, the call is to hold fast to Christ, the Head of the church. From Him the body is nourished and grows. Jesus is sufficient for salvation, and to add to or subtract from Him is to lose the very foundation of the Christian faith. Jesus is enough, and that changes everything.
