Colossians 3:12-17

In this sermon, we conclude Paul’s instruction in Colossians 3 by focusing on what believers are called to “put on” after putting sin to death. If Christians have a new identity in Christ—chosen, holy, and beloved—then they also have a new way of living that reflects that identity.

Paul describes the “dress code” of the Christian life: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love. These are not optional traits or cultural preferences, but essential marks of those who belong to Christ. In a world that often substitutes empathy for compassion, niceness for kindness, and passivity for meekness, Scripture calls believers to a deeper, more faithful expression of Christlike character.

The sermon also emphasizes the “job responsibilities” of the Christian: letting the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, allowing the Word of Christ to dwell richly within us, and living lives marked by gratitude. True spiritual maturity is not merely knowing Scripture, but obeying it—doing everything in the name of the Lord Jesus for His glory.

Ultimately, this passage calls every believer to examine their life: Are you putting on Christ? Does your life reflect the identity you have been given in Him?
