Colossians 1:15-17

In Colossians 1:15–20, the Apostle Paul records what is widely believed to be an early Christian hymn—one meant to shape the church’s worship, theology, and hope in times of suffering. This sermon focuses on the opening stanza of that hymn, which declares Jesus Christ as the Agent of Creation.

Paul teaches that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, fully divine and perfectly revealing the Father. As the “firstborn of all creation,” Christ is not described as created, but as supreme—the rightful heir and ruler over everything that exists. All things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him, which necessarily means that Christ Himself is eternal.

Because Jesus is before all things and holds all things together, His authority extends over every aspect of life. Human beings were created to glorify Him, and there is no category of life—home, work, relationships, or worship—that exists outside His lordship. This passage answers one of humanity’s most pressing questions: What was I created for? Scripture’s answer is clear—we were created to glorify Jesus Christ.
