In this introductory sermon from the book of Colossians, we read of Paul's Credentials, The Church's Character, and Paul's wonderful Confession of Christ. Paul opens his letter to show that his only boast is Christ. Through this text he moves to celebrate that the church in Colossae is exemplary in faith and in action, though he will soon correct their doctrine. In Colossians 1:1–14, we see that faithful Christian living must be built on faithful Christian belief.
This sermon explores Paul’s thanksgiving for the gospel’s fruit in Colossae, his prayer for the church’s spiritual growth, and the assurance believers have through Christ’s redeeming work. Salvation is described as being transferred from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son.
