Philemon 1:1-25

While the book of Philemon is often viewed simply as a personal request concerning a runaway slave, the sermon emphasized that Philemon is ultimately about reconciliation through the gospel.

Paul appeals to Philemon to receive Onesimus back not merely as a servant, but as a beloved brother in Christ. In doing so, the letter beautifully illustrates the grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation believers themselves have received through Jesus Christ. Just as Paul offered to take Onesimus’ debt upon himself, Christ has taken the debt of our sin upon Himself at the cross.

Philemon reminds us that in Christ we are no longer slaves to sin, but welcomed into the family of God as His sons and daughters.
